IV Conscious Sedation
Administering of sedatives through an IV line is called IV Conscious Sedation. This process is safe and reversible. It allows patients to relax in a twilight sleep state and at the same time they are still fully conscious and breathing on their own.
Oral sedation usually acts for a very short term. It is in the form of a pill that is normally Valium or Halcion. This is yet another conscious sedation which allows the patient to be fully conscious but in twilight sleep.
Laughing gas is administered through a nose mask where it is mixed with oxygen to give a conscious sedative effect. It helps in the reduction of fear and anxiety. Once the procedure is completed, you will be placed under pure oxygen for about 10 minutes to remove the effects of the sedation.
All the forms of sedation discussed above are safe and will induce only a conscious mild sedation effect. You will therefore be able to stay awake and respond to commands although you will be in a relaxed state. You will not receive relief from pain from these sedatives as in injection of local anesthetic is mandatory prior to the commencement of your procedure.
